Kathryn Gohmert
(USA)
Kathryn Gohmert’s work focuses on initiating moments of connection and interaction in public and private spaces through the use of site-specific installations, sound instruments, interactive machines, sculpture and performance. These physical and psychological encounters are also often documented by means of mixed media work and drawings. As the need to feel valid, included and “seen” is a core part of what drives our human story, Gohmert’s work celebrates the intentional presence of the individual, remaining incomplete until “activated” by a participant’s exploration. In this way her work aims to provoke heightened lucidity, accountability and awareness in its experiencers. While based in Shanghai from 2008 to 2013 Gohmert worked in a succession of studios, project spaces and communities throughout China including former 696 Weihai Lu community and M50 in Shanghai as well as Songzhuang artist village in Beijing. In 2014 she relocated to Berlin, Germany and in 2019 recieved her MFA in ”Public Art & New Artistic Strategies” from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Her practice is currently divided between Germany, China and the United States.

Gökçen Dilek Acay

(Turkey)

Acay
is Turkish interdisciplinary visual artist and music performer. Acay brings
together works in different mediums, connected with her extensive research on
the evolution of Homo sapiens and notion of power. She employs an unusual
variety of media, such as hair, soap, crochet and mechanical sculptures,
through which she creates an environment that interlaces the organic and the
inorganic, the animate and the inanimate. Acay invites the viewers to
contemplate the origin, the past and the possible future of human kind.

Acay highlights the relations of hierarchy and power between mankind and animals. She aims to reveal how man′s relentless urge to objectify, and the way he interacts with other people is reflective of his relationship with animals.

Born in
Istanbul in 1983, she graduated from Department of Music at Yıldız Technical
University in Istanbul at 2009. In 2012, she completed her Masters degree in
Fine Arts at Bauhaus University in Weimar. Acay was selected to Cite
International des Arts, a prestigious artist residency in Paris in 2015. She
was awarded 3rd Honorable mention in “New Generation Young
Contemporary Artists in Turkey”, a competition organized by Saint Pulchérie
Highschool. Acay′s works have been displayed in art fairs such as
Contemporary Istanbul and Art Brussels by Galeri Nev Istanbul. Acay continues
her practices in artist residencies and independent projects through different
parts of the globe.

Imaginary Animal, 2016
Gökçen Dilek AcayPorcelain, metal and wood
51x150x80 cm

Imaginary Animal (2016) animates the nonliving by means of public interaction.
Human participants are forced to reckon with their role in the reduction of animal life on planet earth by manually turning a wheel in order to see the vertebrate of a dead animal “swim” again.

Inspired by the history of Homo sapiens′ emergence, this artwork examines the notions of authority, obedience, hierarchy and control mechanisms. This work aims to reveal how man′s relentless urge to objectify, and the way he interacts with other people is reflective of his relationship with animals, reflecting the power connotationswithin.
In combining the organic and the inorganic, the animate and the inanimate, Invisible Animal invites the viewers to contemplate the origin, the past and the possible future of human kind.

Where the Wind Comes From, 2011
Chen Hangfeng

The
piece explores the museumification of traditional culture – which has become
more of a specimen of observation rather than a living, breathing part of
contemporary Chinese culture. In this way, it seems the Chinese traditional
culture can only come alive when we engage with it – read the classics, study
poems or practice calligraphy. Without the presence of our gaze it becomes
lifeless and still.

When
the viewer comes close to the work, a number of fans are sent into
action, causing the plastic bamboo leaves to rustle in the wind. A “fake”
traditional Chinese painting in fact revives the spirit of traditional gardens
in the middle of a bustling street, which reflects on our own temporary
presence as a “wind” stirring this changing society.
